Fighting human trafficking

Human trafficking is a horrendous thing, but it is more complex than just simply catching the bad guys.  Many of the issues related to this start at home no matter what part of the world you live in.  Seeing the value in yourself and others, having a safe place to go and limiting the level of desperation goes a long way to helping prevent a person from ending up in a bad situation.  We've seen the issue and work with native people in the slums to understand the problem and help those at risk.

So what does this look like?

Kids Roaming the Streets

Many orphan or lower caste children like these roam the streets of India.  Maybe these kids need to work to earn money for their family, maybe they are orphans living on the streets or are in slavery working for someone else.  It is common to see kids picking through trash, begging or selling items at busy intersections dodging cars and breathing exhaust all day and night.  Maybe they would be in school at least part of the day if there was one near by.  This is a tough life and if not already enslaved, these kids are also very vulnerable to abuse and trafficking.  Instead of being on the street, kids can come to schools like this where they are not only offered an education and a future, b
ut are loved and safe.

Desperation

These kids live an a lower caste tribal region.  The lower caste (Dalit) of India ("untouchables") are taught that they are less valuable than others in society.  It is believed to even associate with them means risking your status both now and eternally.  Most lower caste villages have neither the funds nor opportunities to learn.  The opportunities they have are the least desirable jobs that pay very little.  For these reasons they are very poor and often go hungry.  People frequently come to a village like this offering an "opportunity" for the children.  Out of desperation, lack of understanding and maybe a the belief that they don't deserve better, parents often send a child with these people in exchange for money to feed the rest of the family.  This child may be sold into slavery or prostitution.  Other times children are forced to work to pay off a family debt (bonded laborers).  They may work back breaking jobs that cripple them or expose them to harmful chemicals.  By assisting and educating the people of these villages, there is less desperation, more value placed on their children and they understand the consequences of sending their children with these people.

Orphans

In many areas children who become orphaned often become slaves in exchange for food and a place to sleep as their best means of survival.  They do not get to go to school and may spend their days cleaning, fetching water and are at high risk for abuse.  We want to give them a better option so orphanages have been set up to give children like these opportunities, education, love and safety.

Prostitution

Even if not enslaved, lower caste females often resort to prostitution as a means of survival for themselves and/or families.  Thousands line the streets...many are children.  This ministry has created job opportunities as an alternative to prostitution.
